Information School GTA Scholarships now available!

The Information School is funding up to two PhD scholarships to start in 2023! Successful applicants to these GTA scholarships will be expected to provide up to 180 hours of teaching support per year (minimum 80 hours per year) alongside their research. Therefore, applicants must be able to teach topics on our Postgraduate programmes - we're particularly interested in applicants who could contribute to teaching on our Data Science and Information Systems programmes. If you're based in Sheffield, have a research question/focus in mind, have prior experience in research  and  in teaching and meet our academic entry requirements, then we'd love to hear from you! PhD student Matt Seddon wins CINF Scholarship for Scientific Excellence

Matt Seddon, PhD student in the Chemoinformatics research group, has won the CINF Scholarship for Scientific Excellence at the American Chemical Society meeting in San Francisco, April 2-6. The scholarship program of the Division of Chemical Information (CINF) is designed to reward graduate and postdoctoral students in chemical information and related sciences for scientific excellence. The award was made for his PhD work which he presented as a long abstract and in poster format: Global spectral and diffusion geometry descriptors of 3D molecular shape for virtual screening Authors: Matthew Seddon, David Cosgrove, Martin Packer and Val Gillet Matt also gave an oral presentation. Matt Seddon (second from right) and colleagues Matt's PhD is being funded by a BBSRC Industrial CASE Partnership Studentship in collaboration with AstraZeneca. He is supervised by Professor Val Gillet.

Sheffield Postgraduate Scholarships Launched to Fund Talented Students

100 scholarships worth £10,000 are available for students starting a taught postgraduate course this year. The scholarships are for students who meet at least one of a selection of widening participation criteria (targeting groups under-represented at taught postgraduate level) and/or students who achieve a first in their undergraduate degree.     Further information about the scholarships, including eligibility information and an outline of the application/selection process, can be found here . The deadline for applications is the 22 May 2016.

The Information School is the leading department of it's kind in the UK, with an international reputation.  We have consistently received the highest rating for our research in the regular Research Assessment Exercises (RAE) undertaken by the UK Higher Education Funding Council.  We have a vibrant research culture with regular seminars by staff, students and distinguished guests from around the world. There are currently over 70 students from all over the world carrying out research degrees with the Information School.
