Michael Lynch is the recipient of the 2010 Strix Award

The UK eInformation Group Strix award is an annual award for outstanding contributions to the field of information retrieval and is presented in memory of Dr Tony Kent, a past Fellow of the Institute of Information Scientists (IIS), who died in 1997. Tony Kent made a major contribution to the development of information science and information services both in the UK and internationally, particularly in the field of chemistry.

The Award is given in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the field of information retrieval, and the 2010 recipient is Emeritus Professor Michael F. Lynch for his work on the development of novel techniques for the processing of chemical and textual databases. Prof. Lynch received his award on 29th November at a one-day conference "Celebrating the history of chemical information" that was held at the Royal Society of Chemistry in London.

It was a particular pleasure for me to be able to present the Strix Award to Michael in my role as both Chairman of UKeiG and as a Visiting Professor at the Department. The presentation took place at a Royal Society of Chemistry Meeting on the History of Chemical Information at which Professor Peter Willett gave a first-class presentation on the history of cheminformatics. The end result was three Sheffield Professors (Visiting, Emeritus and "proper") in the room at the same time!

Dr Paul Reilly & Dr Elisa Serafinelli organised IMPROVER workshop, Paris, 10 January 2017

Dr Paul Reilly and Dr Elisa Serafinelli organised a workshop with colleagues from  Euro-Med Seismological Centre (EMSC)  in Paris on 10th January, as part of the Horizon 2020 funded project IMPROVER. Delegates from organisations such as SNCF and VISOV were invited to give their views on the role of social media in disaster response. Thanks to Grigore Havarneanu and the International Union of Railways (UIC) for hosting, and for Laura Petersen and Laure Fallou for their facilitation of the focus group.

My Time in Sheffield as a Visiting Researcher - Dr Abdulhalik Pinar

Returning to Sheffield after more than a decade has been a mixture of nostalgia and new opportunities. I first came here in 2011 to complete my MA in Librarianship, and now, I find myself back as a visiting scholar at the Information School. My time as a visiting researcher at the University of Sheffield has been truly rewarding. I am an academic staff at Harran University in Turkey supported for this visit by Tubitak (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey). This visit has been a great opportunity for my academic and professional development.
